As Newfoundland and Labrador's snow crab season approaches, fish harvesters like Doug Trainor are preparing for a challenging year. Despite investing heavily in his boat and upgrades, Trainor is concerned about U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs on Canadian products, which could significantly impact the province's seafood industry.
With 83% of Newfoundland's snow crab exports heading to the U.S., the fishery is especially vulnerable. Snow crab accounts for nearly 70% of inshore fishing revenue, making it the cornerstone of the industry.
Geoff Irvine of the Lobster Council of Canada warns that tariffs could create price pressures across the value chain, leading to conflicts between fish harvesters and processors over who should bear the financial burden.
While federal and provincial leaders are discussing potential retaliatory measures, the uncertainty surrounding the tariffs leaves fish harvesters like Trainor anticipating a volatile season. Despite the challenges, he remains optimistic, noting that fishing has never been easy.
